چکیده

PURPOSE To determine whether orbital color Doppler imaging (CDI) can be used to detect internal carotid artery stenosis (ICAS) in patients with amaurosis fugax (AF). METHODS Twenty patients with AF (20 symptomatic eyes) and 14 normal controls (14 randomly selected eyes) were studied. The AF patients were divided by magnetic resonance angiography or carotid arteriography into those without ICAS (Group 1, n=14), and those with ICAS (Group 2, n=6). The peak systolic velocities (PSV) and end diastolic velocities (EDV) of the ophthalmic artery (OA) and the central retinal artery (CRA) were determined by orbital CDI, and the values were compared between the three groups. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the PSV and EDV of the CRA between the three groups. However, the PSV and EDV of the OA were significantly lower in Group 2 than in the other two groups. From the distribution of PSV-OA and EDV-OA in AF patients, Group 2 could be separated from Group 1 by the PSV-OA value of 10 cm/s. CONCLUSIONS The PSV-OA of 10 cm/s can be used to identify AF patients with ICAS. It is concluded that orbital CDI is a valuable method for detecting ICAS in AF patients.

بررسی دقت و همبستگی سونوگرافی داپلر رنگی با آنژیوگرافی در تعیین شدت تنگی عروق کاروتید گردنی در بیماران ایسکمی مغزی

This is retrospective double-blind research, which was carried out in Imam Khomeini hospital in order to study the accuracy of color Doppler ultrasonography for detecting the site and grade of stenosis in cervical carotid artery. 40 patients with mean age of 62 years studied with color Doppler before DSA angiography. The most common sites of stenosis were left internal carotid (39.5%) and right...

ارزیابی و بررسی نتایج حاصل از داپلر فراصوتی در مقایسه با آنژیوگرافی تفریقی دیجیتال در تشخیص تنگ شدگیهای شریان کاروتید داخلی

Introduction: Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) is the standard method for detection of carotid artery stenosis. This technique has high radiation dose. With the progress of imaging techniques, noninvasive or minimally invasive methods like the CT angiography, MR angiography and ultrasonography with Doppler or Duplex mode were applicable. This study aimed to evaluate and assesse the results...

Amaurosis fugax: a clinical comparison.

Amaurosis fugax (transient monocular blindness) is a symptom of retinal ischemia just as contralateral hemiparesis and sensory loss are symptoms of cerebral ischemia. These symptoms are produced by atherosclerotic stenosis of the carotid vessels at the ipsilateral carotid bifurcation and emboli from these areas causing focal, repetitive, retinal ischemia. A study of 31 endarterectomy patients w...

Diagnostic performance of duplex ultrasound in patients suspected of carotid artery disease: the ipsilateral versus contralateral artery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To evaluate duplex ultrasonographic thresholds for the determination of 70% to 99% stenosis of the ipsilateral and contralateral internal carotid artery in patients with symptoms of amaurosis fugax, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or minor stroke based on 2 criteria: maximizing accuracy and optimizing cost-effectiveness and to compare these with current recommendations. ...

Amaurosis fugax: the results of arteriography in 59 patients.

Fifty-nine patients had arteriography because of episodes of amaurosis fugax. Only one third of them had atherosclerotic lesions potentially treatable by carotid endarterectomy. Another third had normal arteriograms, some of these had migraine, heart disease or platelet disorders presumed to be the cause of their symptoms. Patients with amaurosis fugax are a heterogeneous group, and their visua...
